This also means the Yankees/Brian Cashman want Hamilton. I believe Cashman is craving to sign Hamilton. He knows that if they don't resign Granderson next year, they will have no outfield. But if they can sign Hamilton this year, they know one corner outfielder is secure for next season and beyond, and would just have to worry about left-field or center.
Their pitching staff is not even secure for next season. Andy Pettitte and Hiroki Kuroda will be gone next season. That leaves C.C Sabathia, Michael Pineda (if healthy) and Ivan Nova.
Yankees should have two options in this off-season. Either fill up the rotation with a sure no.2 like trade for a Cliff Lee, or get a big outfielder for the next couple of years. I believe they have to do two of those things this year.
If Yankees can get Lee, they won't have to worry about the rotation in the next couple of years. When you have Sabathia and Lee as your 1&2 starters, you can add anyone in the bottom of the rotation; doesn't matter who it is. Especially if Pineda can be healthy.
But I'm getting the notion -- if the reports about Granderson being shopped is true -- Yanks would love to get Hamilton. Getting Hamilton won't worry the Yankees about getting a catcher or third basemen. Although, they may sign Kevin Youkilis.
Unfortunately, all this would have to go down if Yankees trade Granderson. And if they trade him, Hughes and Nova, I'm expecting a big return. Not just Hamilton -- Hamilton plus.
