Rudy Gay Traded to the Raptors? What?

January 30, 2013

The Memphis Grizzlies trade away their star player Rudy Gay in a three-team trade involving the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors.

Memphis send Gay and Hamed Haddadi to the Toronto Raptors; Memphis gets Ed Davis, Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and 2013 2nd round pick in return, and Detroit gets Jose Calderon.

From a Grizzlies perpective...I'm lost. The team is fourth in the western conference, and you trade your best player? If the Grizzlies have luxury-tax issues and need to free up money, couldn't say trade him in the off-season?

At first, I thought they got back Ed Davis and Jose Calderon, only. But once the official proposal was release and I saw that Davis, and Tayshaun Prince was going back to Memphis, then I found it a bit understandable. At least they get a proven player back, in Prince.

Feel really bad for Gay. Went from a 29-15, to a 16-29 team ... That's rough to take.
