After the freak injury to Curtis Granderson at yesterday spring training gaem against the Toronto Blue Jays, Ronnier Mustelier replaced the injured Granderson.
And I must say, Mustelier's one hit empressed so much, it made me believe he can be 'that surprise player' to help the Yankees this season.
I know it was just one hit; he only went 3 for 1 in replace of Granderson. But the way he hit the ball up the middle for a base hit with such quickness, got me excited.
Once I heard Mustelier is a Cuban defector, a light bulb went on because Cuban players can be diamonds in the rough. Then, I heard he's Gene Michael pick, the vice-president and senior advisor , that drew even more interest. Because we all know Michael knows his baseball.
I like the kid. Well, he's not even a kid, he's 28-years old.
Maybe Granderson got injured because the baseball gods want to give Mustelier a chance. Things happen for reason. I always believe in that.
Mustelier is a right-handed bat which the Yankees need. He's got a quick, quick bat. Again -- it was just one at-bat ... I have a sense for these things. I can this guy being a major surprise and helping this team.
Remember -- in 2009, Nick Swisher never gets the starting job in right-field if Xavier Nady doesn't get hurt and out for the entire season. Swisher took advantage of that.
Not saying Granderson won't comeback; he will. And we need him back. But this could be a away for Mustelier to be seen, and maybe get the everyday right-field job.
Also, he kinda reminded me of Pablo Sandoval.
