Yankees: Cliff Lee... No? Yea? Maybe?

So let me get this straight: Behind C.C Sabathia, the New York Yankees starting rotation contains a 41-year old Andy Pettitte, a 38-year old Hiroki Kuroda, and an inconsistent Phil Hughes.

Then you look at next season, Pettitte and Kuroda might retire, and Hughes will be gone. Leaving the Yankees rotation with Michael Pineda and suspects behind Sabathia.

If the Philadelphia Phillies are willing to sell toward the end of this month, the Yankees must call the Phillies about making an offer for Cliff Lee.

And I've said time and time and time and time again, don't tell me the Yankees aren't taking a contract like Lee's, when they were going to sign him for more money when he was free agent in 2010.

Getting Lee, would be for this season and next. A rotation of Sabathia and Lee with suspects behind it, is better than Sabathia alone.

Yankees have a ton of money coming off the books next year. Pettitte and Kuroda are free agents, or will retire. That's $27 million off the payroll. They won't re-sign Curtis Granderson. That's another $15 million off the books.

I understand they're gonna pay Robinson Cano major bucks, but his money is separate and Lee will only be with the Yankees for one more year.

If they can Lee this season, they have to rush Pineda into the rotation -- they can put in the bullpen.

Right now, Yankees have Kuroda missing a start because of his hip, and a 41-year old Pettitte struggling. If one of those guys do down -- god forbid -- Yankees are in deep, deep trouble.
