3.5 games back in the A.L Wild Card? OH YEAH! PLAYOFF PUSH, YEAH!
But lets take it easy and stay calm, as the New York Yankees sweep the Toronto Blue Jays, and won their fifth straight.
Andy Pettitte: Looking better and better, thankfully. If the Yankees want to stay hot in August and September, C.C Sabathia and Andy Pettitte need to pitch like the one-two starters they are in this rotation. And so far, from what I saw in Friday's start against the Boston Red Sox and today's start against the Blue Jays, Pettitte is getting back to that form again.
Pettitte's control and the bite on his cutter is the difference to why his recent success. Beginning to get weak ground balls from his cutter -- not like before, when right-handed just sat there and just easily pulled a flat cutter or fastball. Now that cutter is starting to get heavy.
I figured Pettitte was going to get on a role again, at some point. And this is the perfect time for him to get hot. With the offense looking at it's best for the first time all year, a rolling Pettitte to go with that would be lovely.
Eduardo Nunez: Big, big RBI single in the 6th by Nunez, that really broke open the game.
It's gonna be tough having Nunez play less time when Derek Jeter returns this weekend, at Tampa Bay. Nunez has batted .343 in the last ten games.
Jeter could play a lot of DH now, with his knee being fragile this season, and Nunez can play at short. In past couple of years, us Yankee fans would want the other way around -- meaning: have Nunez play DH and Jeter play short, since Jeter is the better fielder. Well, Nunez has shown not to be 'that bad' this year at short and Jeter's range has slipped a little.
I also like Nunez's bat. He's got a dangerous bat. He can almost hit to all fields, with power into the gaps. Not to forget his speed on the base paths.
We'll see how Joe Girardi will manage this when Jeter returns.
Alex Rodriguez's Double Play: That double play in the top 5th, saved the game. That was hard liner from Rajai Davis, and A-Rod played it beautifully. If that ball gets passed him, the Yankees are trailing 4-0 in that spot.
Curtis Granderson: We missed this man. Those solo homeruns he's hit for us in the past three years, are big homeruns. Even when he goes 1-4 with three strikeouts and a homerun, that homerun matters greatly.
If you really look at it, the Yankees haven't gotten much lefty power all year. They miss Granderson and players from last year like Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez who can put that ball over that short porch in right. Those guys put up runs on the board in a blink of an eye. That's why I thought the Yankees needed Justin Morneau, because Lyle Overbay isn't a power hitter -- he's a singles, doubles hitter.
But it's great to see Grandy back.
Tampa Bay Rays: Major series at Tropicana Field this weekend. And the key player to me in this series, is C.C Sabathia.
Sabathia has got to come up big against the east rival Rays. Last Sunday against Red Sox, he got saved by the Yankee offense when they came from behind. He cannot give up six runs.
Sabathia's velocity is starting to look good. Maybe he's starting to get on a run here.
