Astros defeat Yankees, 5-3.
Welp, just when I thought the Yankees would hold a 2-0 lead and get win on Opening Day, which they haven't done in five years now, the Houston Astros left the Yankees just how they ended their 2015 season.
Now let's get to the main story of this game, which was the error throw from Dellin Betances, as he was trying to throw out shortstop Carlos Correa. But the reason why Betances threw the ball away, is for the fact that Correa was running inside the baseline. As you see here.
Correa, should've been out. Nope. He was called safe by the umpires, after Yankee manager Joe Girardi argued, but the call stood.
He was definitely out. And the funny thing is, if Betances hits Correa, he's out. But since Betances threw the ball over Correa and Mark Teixeira's head, it was looked at as an error from the umpires.
Nevertheless, Betances after that gives up two more runs. Trailing 3-2 into the bottom eighth would've a lot better than losing 5-2.
And the best thing about this lost is -- it's the first game of the season! Sure, I'd like to win, just to feel good and make a good impression on the first game of the season, but hey, it's early.
Even though the Yankees lost, I liked some things I saw. Like the two-out, RBI double from Starlin Castro, that gave the Yankees the early lead.
The Didi Gregorius solo homerun was nice to see too, when he hit it in the bottom eighth, that brought the Yankee trail to 5-3. I could see Gregorius enhancing his power in Yankee Stadium.
I thought Brian McCann looked pretty good, too; didn't do much, was only 1-for-3 with a single. But I liked the way he looked at the plate; McCann looks much more relaxed in his third year with the Yankees.
I can't judge this team yet, it's only one game, but I will say - if Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner don't get on base, the Yankees are gonna have to hit a lot of homeruns if they wanna be in this thing. If Ellsbury and Gardner get on base, it makes it easier for Alex Rodriguez, Teixeira and Carlos Beltran to drive them in with singles or doubles.
On my other post where I listed the "Ten Yankee Players To Watch", I talked about Castro possibly ending up as the number three hitter. Instead of relying on an older A-Rod to produce, in the three hole. With Castro batting third, A-Rod can protect him, giving Castro more pitches to hit.
And you know what, Ellsbury, Gardner or even Beltran don't produce, bench them. I'm tired of the Yankees playing players because they have to, since they're making a lot of money on long-term contract. If they struggle, bench them and bring up Aaron Judge; the hell with it, just bring him up.
Look what the Boston Red Sox are doing with Pablo Sandoval. They're paying him $100 million dollars and they replaced him with a 25-year-old rookie, Travis Shaw.
Watching Beltran in the outfield.
Jose Altuva hit a double today and the way Beltran was running for it, really worries me. He hardly can't run, anymore. His knees are shot. I don't like it watching play right field, at all.
I hate to say this, being a Puerto Rican and me liking Beltran because he's one of the very few great Puerto Rican players, but if he doesn't hit, the Yankees could cut him. I don't think the Yankees would have a problem paying him the $15 million.
NO ONE in the majors, today, has a 38-year-old everyday outfielder. No one!
