In this day-and-age where skateboarding has been a rejuvenated sport and hobby for teenagers and young adults, where hip-hop rappers like Lil Wayne became a skateboarder, you'd think by now we'd a have a televised pro skateboarding competition on national television.
The reason why I'm bringing this up is because the X-Games just began, where there's many competitions besides skateboarding, like freestyle BMX bike contests and Moto X dirt bikes. And I saw the X-Games ad on a commercial on ESPN, and my brother was next to me and told him: 'Why isn't skateboarding events main stream television?'
Now, the X-Games is on ESPN, which is best sports channel in the world. But when you flip through the other ESPN channels during the mid-day and sporting events like Bowling and Women's College Softball are being televised, I began to wonder who the hell runs ESPN.
No offense to Women's Softball, I know women need their own sporting event for equality, but you can't tell me there'd be more of an audience for Women's Softball than Skateboarding competitions.
And forget Bowling. I don't know how in the hell that's on television. Hey listen, I love to bowl at the Chelsea Piers but if that has t.v time, Skateboarding should too.
Same thing goes for golf and tennis being on national television. Golf is a sport no one gets out of it, unless you're rich. I only watch golf when Tiger Woods is playing. As for tennis, I get mix feelings because it is a true, great sport, but it's predominantly a European sport. Besides Serena Williams, every player is from overseas.
Same goes for Soccer -- or "Futbol". In America, they're publicizing this sport to an insane level. Maybe some people who were born in American like Soccer, but I don't -- I'm from Brooklyn, I only played baseball, basketball and football. I know a lot of Mexican-Americans love it, as they should because it's a bigger sport in Mexico; and they played it religiously. Like Tennis, it's an overseas sport.
The corporations are desperately trying to make Americans like Soccer. Why? When there's a sport in America like Skateboarding that's popular in New York AND Los Angeles.
On top of that, Skateboard clothing is major in the fashion world. Hip-hop rappers began to wear skinny jeans because of skateboarders. Even the sneakers; do you realize how big Nike SB sneakers are? Or Vans!? Do you know how fucking big Vans sneakers have been in the past ten years? People like myself who don't skate, wear Vans.
Once the NBA season is over, Skateboarding events should be televised on ABC or NBC on Sunday afternoons. I think it'd be great for both kids and adults to watch. Imagine watching Skateboard competition on a summer Sunday morning with your son?
Not only should it be televised for the world to watch these Skateboarders who are immense athletes who are brave as hell, but it's a sport that should become a bigger in this country for the kid who loves to skate whose leaving in poverty and wants to become a pro at it. Or grow jobs for others who wanna become Skateboarding analyst for EPSN or writers for the Bleacher Report.
In the past ten years, Skateboarding has reached out to all demographics and race. African-Americans, Hispanics have grown to love the sport. That's why I don't understand how big it is and it's not bigger in the main stream world.
