While it's very difficult for us to believe that the notion of the New York Knicks signing Kevin Durant, believe or not, it's very possible.
If you look at every team that's gonna be pursuing Durant this summer, they all have a certain reason why he wouldn't go there. Let me name all those reasons why Durant would go to that team.
Golden State Warriors
Why would Durant play with a player that's as big or becoming bigger than LeBron James? I don't see Durant playing with the biggest star in the league, in Stephen Curry, who might have two championships after the season is over and is gonna have to learn how that team plays. No way.
San Antonio Spurs
He could end up in Texas, a state where he played his college years in, but I don't see the Spurs offering him a boatload of money, combine with the fact that the Spurs aren't about getting big star free agents, even though they signed one of the biggest free agents last year, in LaMarcus Aldridge.
But if Durant signs with San Antonio, he's gonna have to share the ball with two players who're gonna basically be in his way. Aldridge is a power-forward who likes to shoot inside and outside, and they have another player who does the same in Kawhi Leonard. You add those two with Durant, in a team that has a system on sharing the ball, you're asking for a disgruntle team.
Miami Heat
Everyone points to Miami, because of Pat Riley, Dwyane Wade, the hot weather and their recent championship run.
But there's a reason why Durant might not go there. The main reason is because of who was running the team in that championship run. I can't see Durant going to a team where LeBron James took the Heat to four straight NBA Finals and won two titles. Why would you wanna follow those footsteps and compete with that? I would think he'd wanna go to a team that he can start his own legacy in.
Los Angeles Lakers
You may ask: Wait, why wouldn't he wanna go to the Lakers? Kobe Bryant is gone, the Lakers have the no.2 pick in this year's Draft, they have couple of young upcoming players and - like Miami - it's good weather!
But you know why I think Durant wouldn't go to L.A. Because that's the team Russell Westbrook wants to go when he becomes a free agent in 2017. Durant is not gonna do that to Westbrook and ruin his plans and dreams.
Although, if Durant does sign with the Lakers, I could see Westbrook signing with the Knicks in 2017. Westbrook is gonna sign with a big market team; I know that for a fact.
That brings me to the NEW YORK KNICKS as the team that best fit Durant's destination.
Why the New York Knicks!? There's many reasons why; one of them is that Durant will play with a perfect combination of a veteran player in Carmelo Anthony, whose gonna show him around New York and be big brother to him, and he's gonna play with the ultimate, talented rookie in Kristaps Porzingis, who he can be a big brother to and play with in the future, after Melo is retired.
A couple of years ago when the media was talking Durant's free agency and possibly coming to the Knicks, I thought it was a bad idea to have Melo and Durant play with each other. Both players need to have the ball in their hands to score and would barely share it with each other. But now I feel that Melo is older, wiser and realizes that the Knicks need another star in order for them to win a championship.
I think Melo is okay with becoming the second star on the team. He knows he's getting older, his knees aren't healthy and can't bring up the ball in every possession (although the reason he did a lot was for that fact the Knicks didn't have a point-guard for a lot of seasons Melo has been here). Can't rely on him at this age of 32, to carry the team anymore. And he knows that.
Durant and Melo are two of the three superstar players -- the other being Chris Paul -- who've been in the NBA for nine seasons or more, who haven't won a championship. Melo and Durant aren't getting younger so how about they join forces to end that drought.
Durant knows how unstoppable the Knicks can be with him there, alongside Melo and Porzingis. Yes, they'd still need a point-guard, but with a threesome like that the Knicks won't need a big star guard like Mike Conley. A free agent Rajon Rondo, whose a assist machine, would be perfect! Rondo will make sure all three (KD, Melo & KP) will score 20-points a game. Not only that, Rondo has won before - and won big playoff games and been to a couple of NBA Finals.
I always like to look at the 2008-09 Boston Celtics. Before that season, the Celtics were a historic franchise who hadn't won a championship in years. Then in the offseason acquired two future hall of famers, in Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, who were superstars hadn't won championship in their careers and decided to sign with Boston to help another all-star who also hadn't won, in Paul Pierce. Not only Pierce, but Garnett and Allen went down as one of the greatest Celtic players because of that championship they won that season and the playoff runs they had.
I view Pierce, Allen, Garnett, the same way I view Melo, Durant and Porzingis. If you're Durant, why go to Miami when LeBron already won there. Or to Golden State or San Antonio, where others have won already. Come to a historic franchise like the New York Knicks, with Melo and Porzingis, where the chances of winning a title in New York becomes the biggest it's been since the 1990's. You put those three together and they're winning a championship. Guaranteed.
