Last year the Texas Rangers acquired Cole Hamels in mid-season and they were supposedly "out of it". They actually made the trade when facing the Yankees in a series. Rangers ended winning the N.L. West.
As of right now the Yankees are on the verge of making a trade with the Chicago Cubs, to send closer Aroldis Chapman to Chi-town for the Cubs top prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres.
But like every Yankee fan, I'm questioning to myself why are the Yankees acquiring shortstop. I understand this is a top, can't miss, prospect, but the Yankees already plenty of young shortstops, like the 26-year-old shortstop whose on the team right now, in Didi Gregorius. They also have another shortstop whose one of their top prospects in Jorge Mateo, 21, whose in Class A in Tampa.
Now they're about to get a 19-year-old shortstop, in Torres, who might NEVER be seen play in the Bronx.
That's why the next best guess would be the Yankees flipping these prospects around back to Chicago. No, not to the Cubs -- to the White Sox.
With all the ruckus and trouble going on with the White Sox ace Chris Sale and with the team speaking to recent teams about trading, Sale can't be more available. This might be the best time for the Yankees to land Sale.
I always thought: The Yankees need another big time pitcher, if they wanna get back to the postseason again. They need another C.C. Sabathia; a horse whose gonna take the ball and stop losing streak or go deep into games. And the pitcher that always came up, was Sale.
Not only Sale is a great, dominant pitcher, but he's a lefty. The Yankees need a dominant lefty, again, who can shut down left-handed hitters in Yankee Stadium. Besides Clayton Kershaw whose never leaving the Dodgers, Sale is next best lefty pitcher out there.
I think the Yankees have to trade for Sale, if, they wanna get back to the top next season. If they wanna continue to grow prospects; have another 'air the contracts' type year; be out of the postseason and see empty seats in Yankee Stadium again, then they don't have make the trade.
Listen, I'm all for the Yankees getting younger from the farm system. But when a name like Chris Sale is on the block, a pitcher that makes too much sense for the Yankees, it's hard not trade prospects for an ace like that.
I would hate to trade Aaron Judge, but I'd have to make him available. Be if I trade him for Sale -- Judge would be the only major piece going back in package; I'd surround him with minor prospects. Judge a big piece as it is.
I'd offer the White Sox two packages: One with Judge being the only major player in the deal or a package that'll involve Jorge Mateo, Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino. Although I would stay away from trade Judge, as much as possible.
