Today marks the fifth-teen year anniversary of r&b singer Aaliyah's tragic death.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was a Saturday morning and I was watching New York 1 News and I will never forget those words of "Aaliyah Died in Plane Crash". It was so surreal I had to wait t'll they said it again since NY1 News is a 24/hour news channel, that ran on a loop.
Then I saw those words again. This time, I saw a graphic of a rose next to those letters. Such a dark, chilling moment.
It took me a good month to get over Aaliyah's passing. It was a combination of her being young and her music really touching, those of us, in the urban world. I felt like she was taken away from us, than this being an accident.
Aaliyah's a pioneer. She opened door for singers like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Janelle Monae; hell, even Beyonce. Aaliyah started the dominant black woman 'look', in r&b. She was one of the first to have this 'I don't need a man by my side' look, in order for a woman to be successful. But she didn't show it off in an arrogant or rude way. She did it the way Aaliyah did it -- which was: with class.
Miss ya, baby girl.
