In award shows, some grew up to certain hosts. Some grew up to Bob Hope, Billy Crystal, Eddie Murphy. Me? I grew up to -- who I think is the greatest award show host of all-time - Chris Rock.
The 1999 MTV Video Music Awards were one of my favorite VMAs ever. And the main part of it was because of Chris Rock's monologue.
Putting the jokes aside, I loved how electric the start of the show was. Adding to the diverse, star-studded audience; mixed with rappers, white rappers, rock stars from past to present, movie stars; it was a great atmosphere. That's the main reason why I always loved the VMAs and MTV in general at this time period; they had all different types of musicians and people.
Even though, at this time, a lot of these musicians weren't big stars yet. Sure, now we look back and notice the big name stars who were attendance, but someone like Eminem wasn't the 'legendary rapper' he is now, back in 1999. He was just starting his career. Same goes for Kid Rock and Korn; those guys were just starting.
All and all, it was such a cool vibe in the arena.
But the vibe those celebs had was for the anticipation of Chris' opening.
When you look back at Chris' jokes and how old they were, some are not as funny anymore and some are still funny. The one that wasn't funny anymore but was funny in '99, was "when will one of the NSYNC boys will get Britney Spears pregnant." Not as funny in 2016. But the others like "Ricky Martin needing another hit, like crackhead needs a hit" - still funny in 2016.
