A great opening -- but a terrible ending.
If you're Met fan, the positive that you have take out of this 2012 season is the pitching and the heart they showed in the first half of the season.
The Mets pitching rotation has potential. A little bit a of inexperience, but can be very good.
Going into the season, Johan Santana was going to be questionable coming from that shoulder injury. He wasn't one-hundred percent. But what you got out of him this year was good enough. Did the no-hitter game hurt more ? Probably. But you had to let him finish that game. It was moment the Met fans needed. Especially when no Met pitcher has ever pitched a no-hitter/perfect game.
I think Santana comes out strong next season. What he showed this season just by throwing an 88-89 mph fastball, was amazing. And if he can get that velocity up, at least to around 91-92, he's gonna be even better.
Mets need Santana to be great next season, if they want to contend. He's their ace. Even though, I know R.A Dickey was the Mets ace this season -- it wouldn't hurt to have both Santana and Dickey pitching well.
Mets need veterans like Santana and Dickey in a young rotation.
You just hope -- if you're a Met fan -- Santana doesn't have anymore shoulder issues. If he does, that's trouble.
R.A Dickey: Mets have to give him an extension. He was the only reason why the Mets has some importance and something to watch. He needs to a raise for that. Not just because he pitched like a Cy Young winner, but he's a great guy. He's class acted. Give him his money.
With Santana and Dickey as the one-two starters and healthy -- Mets can win many games.
Jonathon Niese -- is a pitcher who should be better than what he is. Niese needs to step up next season, and be that strong no.3 pitcher in the rotation. He's got the stuff. I can see him being a Cliff Lee-type, one day.
Niese has got to take that role.
Matt Harvey is going to be really good; I like his stuff. Chris Young -- you hope he comes back healthy from the start of the season.
If Santana and Dickey are healthy, you know they're going to be good. Niese and Harvey are the ones who need to surprise everyone next season. Especially Niese; you can't really rely on the 23-year old Harvey, but if he can pitch well, with Niese, they can make noise.
The Offense: If the Mets get offense, it's gonna have to be via trade. GM Sandy Alderson has already stated that he won't spend big money this off-season -- which must have sent millions of grunts from Met fans.
If you ask me what trade would that be -- I'd say a trade with the Boston Red Sox for Jacoby Ellsbury. If the Red Sox are interested in Ike Davis -- like some sources have said -- if I was Alderson, I would make the trade. Davis has good power and a good glove, but for some reason I see him not becoming the star everyone is making him out to be. I don't think he 'has it'.
Now, if the Mets can get Ellsbury, they should do it. Ellsbury has power, speed, defense and he's clutch. He's also won a World Series.
Mets could use a dangerous leadoff hitter like Ellsbury.
Trade David Wright: You know .... I would normally say no. Though, I can see the Mets trading Wright and start to win -- for some reason. Though, I would only trade Wright for another star player. Like an Ellsbury.
I wouldn't trade Wright just for the simple fact of him being the face of the franchise, and what he's meant to the Mets. But sometimes...you gotta make a change.
