By far, the best Saturday Night Live episode of season 39. And I was not shocked by that, since I knew who the host was. Just, too bad Hulu didn't post two of the best sketches of the night.
Lady Gaga hosting SNL for the very first time and was sensational. Gaga was confident and fearless, at live last night; just like a true New Yorker. Couldn't have done a better job in my view.
I kinda figure she was going to be pretty good, because she's always reinventing herself. And that's what an SNL cast member does for a living -- they reinvent themselves on stage. Obviously they don't change their real, off-the-stage personality life, like Gaga does, but they sorta do for two-half hours on a Saturdays. Kate McKinnon may play a stressed out nurse worrying about patients sticking things up their asses, but she's still Kate. So that's why it was fun and easy for Gaga to host SNL.
Everyone knows how great Gaga's voice is, although, when she combines that with acting -- lord almighty. She just has jaw-dropping talent.
Cold Open: Rob Ford:
Another terrific sketch by Bobby Moynihan. Shades of Chris Farley when smashing himself on the floor.
Waking Up With Kimye:
Naseem Pedrad is the best at impersonating Kim Kardashian. She's got the annoying Kim vocal sound, to perfection.
How about Jay Pharoah? This guy is on a roll. Moving up to be one of the top dog on SNL.
Also, I would love to go out with Karen.
Lady Gaga Performs: "Do What You Want"
I heard this song on a commercial and didn't think it was from Gaga. Shouldn't have been on that commercial, though.
This is a real pop song. It's something entirely different than most of the songs out there today -- and entirely different than the crap out there today. It's a pop song from one of the biggest pop stars we've ever seen.
Good to see R.Kelly on stage and performing again. One of the true, gifted R&B genius from the 1990's.
4th Grade Talent Show:
Hilarious. Not only a funny sketch, but it showed me how hard Gaga performed on SNL. She did this right after she performed on stage.
And finally, John Milhsier, whose one of the newest members of SNL this year, had his big moment. By far his best sketch on SNL. When Milhsier first auditioned on front Lorne Michaels, I wonder if they thought of Chris Katten...?
Blockbuster:
Great short film and also sad at the same time. Seeing Blockbuster end is a pop-culture sadness for those who grew up in the late 80's, early 90's. Blockbuster is old, I don't even think of it as a place that rents DVDs.
R.I.P Blockbuster
Jebidiah Atkinson:
That was the first time I seen Taran Killam break character.
I thought this was very, funny but I don't know if most people at home got it.
Killam plays Jebidiah, whose a character from the 1770s, that's a gossip columnist -- I guess. The genius of it was seeing someone from this time period speak and act this way.
