NY Daily News beat writer, Mark Feinsand, reported and tweeted earlier that the New York Yankees are in talks with the St. Louis Cardinals for their third baseman David Freese.
We've heard rumors about the Cardinals possibly trading Freese, but didn't think much of it; I -- for that matter -- didn't believe much of it. Just because he had one bad season after his magical 2012 season, the Cardinals are going to trade him? Doesn't make sense.
Now we hear the Yankees are trying to swipe the 2012 World Series MVP from St. Louis, who are on the hunt for a third baseman, since this guy name A-Rod (I don't know if you know him..) might be suspended through the entire 2014 season due to alleged performance-enhancing drug ties to the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic.
I wanted Chase Headley. I think Headley would be perfect, with his power and switch-hitting. But if Freese is starting at third, at opening day for the Yankees, I'll be just as happy. Yea -- he had a 'not-so 2012' season last year, but I'll take him at third, rather than a 35-year old Eric Chavez, or the shortstop for the World Champion Boston Red Sox, Stephen Drew, who is a free agent this offseason and can play third, though, he simply can't hit.
I want a true third baseman. I don't want a SS/3B utility player at third base, unless his name is Ben Zobrist -- that's the only utility player I'll take at third. But 'no', to Drew and Chavez. The Yankees need a third baseman that's in his prime; like a Headley or a Freese. Not a old or .220 hitter. An all around solid player at third is needed, with an aging Derek Jeter at short. We can't have the left side of the infield have players that are three years away from retirement.
Seems like a potential deal between the Yankees and Cardinals that would send Freese to New York probably won't happen today, but can still happen in a month from now. These talks are just preliminary -- like warming up a car on a 10-degree weather (no-pun intended. You know...because of the name "Freese" :D). Also, you can't expect a trade that involves a pretty big name in David Freese, to happen this early in the offseason.
Freese would be a perfect pickup, if the Bombers can land him, and/or if they can get him for a good price. And I believe they can get him for a reasonable price of one or two minor leaguers. Might cost the Yankees a little, but hey, he's a World Series MVP whose only 30-years old, with a good glove and power. Gotta give up to get. Though, I think, he won't be too expensive.
Replacing A-Rod at third base, is just as tough as finding the next closer to replace Mariano Rivera. Don't just accidentally kick A-Rod's nine-year stats with the Yankees, under the sofa. You can't tell me those numbers he put will be easy to replace.
